What is Acupuncture?

What is Acupuncture?

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a centuries-old healing practice designed to support the body's own ability to recover and function well. By placing fine needles at specific points on the body, sometimes combined with Gua Sha, Percussion techniques, muscle manipulation or gentle heat, it activates natural processes that support both physical and emotional health.

The Science and Tradition Behind Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese medicine describes a network of energy pathways ( called meridians )that carry vital energy (qi) throughout the body, similar to rivers nourishing the land. When these pathways become blocked, it can disrupt the body's balance and lead to pain or illness. Acupuncture needles work to clear these blockages and restore natural flow.

From a modern scientific perspective, the needles stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals can directly alter how pain is experienced and trigger a cascade of hormonal responses that help the body regulate itself resulting in improved energy, reduced pain, and better overall function.

How many sessions will I need?

Every person responds differently, and treatment length varies based on the nature and severity of the condition. Acute issues often resolve in less visits, while chronic or complex conditions may benefit from one to two sessions per week over a longer period. On average, patients experience 75% pain relief within five-six treatments.

Is it safe? Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is overwhelmingly safe when performed by a trained practitioner. Side effects are rare some mild bruising can occasionally occur. The needles themselves are extremely fine, solid, and made from surgical-grade stainless steel. Only single-use, pre-sterilized, individually packaged needles are used, the skin is also cleaned with alcohol. Risk of infection is incredibly low.

Most patients find acupuncture painless. You may notice a mild tingling, heaviness, or warmth at the needle site or you may feel nothing at all. Either response is completely normal.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Many major insurance providers include acupuncture in their coverage. We recommend reviewing your plan or contacting your insurer directly to confirm your benefits before your first appointment.
